ISO 7170規(guī)定了確定完全組裝并可供使用的存儲單元（包括其可移動和不可移動部件）的強度和耐用性的測試方法。測試包括向裝置的各個部分施加負載、力和速度，模擬正常功能使用以及合理預期可能發(fā)生的誤用。
測試結(jié)果僅對測試的單元/組件有效。這些結(jié)果可用于表示生產(chǎn)模型的性能，前提是測試模型能夠代表生產(chǎn)模型。根據(jù)ISO 7170:2005進行的測試旨在證明該產(chǎn)品在其預期環(huán)境中提供令人滿意的服務的能力。這些測試是針對尚未使用的單元/組件開發(fā)的。然而，如果有適當?shù)睦碛?，它們可以用于故障調(diào)查。
不包括老化和降解的評估。
