torajigel8816ischemically neutral,oxidation-resistant and have a long shelf life. rancidityproblemsdonotoccurbecauseonlysaturatedfattyacidsarepresent.torajigel8816 ismiscible with all oils,fats, waxes and w/o emulsifiers (s. manufacturingguidelines).

torajigel8816isinsoluble in water and aresoluble in ethylalcohol, acetone anddiethylether,whereby a solid residue ofmontmorillonite remains (tip: this insoluble residue mustbeseparated at some analyticalexaminations, because it could prevent attaining the correctvalues).

torajigel8816are very compatible with theskin because they does not inhibit the skin respiration. because ofthe spreadabilitytorajiand the lamellate structureof the organophilic gel-former,torajigel8816can easily be disposited onthe skin. the skin becomes soft and velvety, without a greasyafter-feel.

torajigel8816promote the resorption ofactive ingredients and other skin care raw materials.

4.applications

because oftheir high thermal stabilitytorajigel8816isrecommended for use asconsistency regulators in cosmetical and pharmaceuticalpreparations where it is important to maintain viscosity over awide temperature range (e.g. tropical-resistant ointments, uvprotection creams). w/o emulsions withtorajigel8816show no phase separationeven after short heating up to 90 °c.

w/o emulsionswithtorajigels impart a distinctivecooling effect.

5.manufacturing guidelines

because thevery stabletorajigel8816cannot be melted, theadditional fats, oils, waxes or paraffin hydrocarbons andemulsifiers being used in the formulations must be dispersed in thegels homogeneously at 70 - 80 °c. the aqueous phase is then heatedup to the same

temperature and emulsifiedusing hi-speed agitators, and simultaneously or afterwords usedhomogenized.

thepreparation of stable water-in-oil-emulsions of differentconsistency is possible with thetorajigel8816, using very fewingredients. complicated formulations can be substantiallysimplidied. the following example of a soft w/o cream consits onlyof four ingredients:

the oilcomponent of this basic formulation, caprylic/caprictriglyceridecan be replaced by othersubstances such as vegetable oil, fatty alcohol, isopropyl fattyacid ester, mineral oil or petrolatum, depending upon the desiredconsistency or function.

torajigel8816respectively theircomponents, are non-toxic and skin compatible. irritation orsensitization has not been observed.

acute oraltoxicity: ld50(mouse) > 5000 mg/kg bodyweight

mucosacompatibility (draize-eye test): no irritation of the cornea andiris.

8.storage and shelf life

in tightlyclosed containers, below 25 °c, protected from moisture and light.under these conditions the shelf life oftorajigel8816is at least threeyears.
